Yesterday we did nothing significant at all. It was great. We had been out the night before with Bob and Julie to the night club. It was an extremely loud nightclub. Some of the staff from the Aguila de Osa were there and Brooke did a salsa with Claudio, one of the serving staff from the restaurant part of the hotel. We all danced a bit and Julie even played foosball with some of the locals!
Mom and I took some kayaks out in the morning and, later, Brooke and I took a walk down the beach for some quiet time.
The area is so quiet that you hardly encounter anyone. There is a little village at Drake Bay but it is very dispersed, you never feel like you’re seeing a community.
The beach was very interesting in that it varied from coarse rocky pebbles to super fine muddy sand. It was a good geology demonstration regarding sedimentation! I know, I’m a geek.
We enjoyed our last night but got to bed early even though Claudio was encouraging us to come out to the bar again. We knew that the next day was going to be a long day.
This morning we took the boat back from Drake Bay and drove to the town of Palmar Norte where we saw some of the huge stone spheres, characteristic of Costa Rican archaeology. Some were about 5ft in diameter. Apparently no one knows their significance or how they were carved so expertly into a sphere – another mystery of the ancient world. Though, I have to say, honestly, for a region that didn’t even invent the wheel…………
We landed ourselves back here at Steve’s today. Tomorrow we’ll be dropping mom off at the airport and then driving to an impromptu stay in Monteverde. We have seen enough in Quepos and Manuel Antonio to warrant moving on. Everyone told us before we left that we should go to Monteverde. So, that’s where we’ll be tomorrow.
