Drive to Sierepe and a boat to Aguila de Osa

Yesterday we dropped Kevin and Miranda off at the airport, Miranda saw the planes and had some immediate and understandable reservations. The planes were teeny tiny propeller planes that did look like they could be scary to fly in. It sounds like they made it safely to San Jose. It saves around 3 or 4 hours of driving and takes only 25 minutes to fly. Mom gets to fly that same flight next week when we drop her off – at least now we know where the airport is and how long it takes to get there.

Today we drove to our new adventure here in the Osa Peninsula. We got on a boat this morning in the small town of Sierepe and headed down river through the mangroves and along the beach to Drake Bay. Our ride down the river was a little more than we bargained for with the rain just pelting us. There was an awning that did nothing at the speed we were going. The only thing dry about me was my back. Luckily our bags were stowed in the bow of the boat (the only dry place). We were surprised by this rain because it was sunny and hot when we boarded the little speed boat. The showers are incredibly scattered here and when they hit, it’s in buckets.

We’re staying at a wonderful resort, Aguila de Osa. Our room is a beautiful

cabin with no windows, just a panorama of screens. You can hear everything everywhere including the critters outside – it’s like camping, but in luxury. Our room is massive with a high-pitched roof and a huge porch fitted with rocking chairs and hammocks. The room and porch are decked with beautiful, gleaming hardwood.

I’m sitting in the main area that is a large open air area with fantastic views of the ocean and beautiful gardens. This main area is the bar, the dining room, the computer room and the check-in. We had no fuss checking in, just got off the boat, soaking wet and were shown to our rooms. Our luggage was brought to our rooms and the staff asked us to put our wet clothes in a bag for them so they could dry them. We did a few things and got back to the room an hour later where our clothes were sitting folded on the bed. You are treated like a king here in a way I have never seen. The resort/hotel here isn’t opulent, it’s just comfortable and they care for you. It only can take 30 people at any time and I think there are only 16 people here right now – if everyone knew how great this place was it would be packed. It may not be for everyone but it is so communal here. Because it is all inclusive (except liquor) you can get food any time or drinks and anything you need they try and help you with. The staff is so friendly and communal, treating you like a guest in their home almost.

We had our first dinner with everyone tonight and met a nice family and some other couples. They put out appetizers at 6:00pm and everyone gets a chance to socialize with other guests before sitting down to the chef’s dinner. The food is put out as dishes on the table, family style. You can’t believe how good it is. Apparently they grow all their own vegetables. It’s delicious.

Tomorrow we are off to Corcovado park to hopefully see the monkeys.
